Our working model

Assessments grounded in the equipment, not a textbook

Most operational consulting is delivered by people who have never held a commercial licence. Ours isn’t.

Northwest Consulting & Optimization Group LTD is a small firm by design. When you engage us, you work directly with the principal — the same person who reviews your numbers, walks your yard, drives your routes, and signs the report. Nothing is delegated to a junior analyst, because there isn’t one.

That has trade-offs, and we’re direct about them. We take on a limited number of engagements at a time. We don’t have a research department. What we have is more than a decade of running freight across these lanes and the operational judgment that comes with it — which, for a private fleet trying to find real savings, is usually the thing that was missing.

Kevin Messier

Owner-Operator, President

Kevin has spent over a decade and a half behind the wheel and in the office : hauling TL, LTL, oversize, and specialized freight across Canada and the U.S., and running the business that supports it. He leads all operational assessments and cost-reduction work, manages carrier and route logistics, and handles regulatory and administrative matters for the firm. His consulting practice is built on the operational side of the business, not adjacent to it.

Dave Woodhall

VP, Communications & IT

Our communications officer manages public communications, internal documentation, and the firm’s digital infrastructure, with a background in graphic and web design. With a totally different lane (pun intended!) and a preference for saying what we can do and nothing more, Dave doubles as the in-house communications and IT departments.

Operational Assessment &
Optimization

We review your fleet operations end to end — dispatch, routing, asset utilization, scheduling, and administration — and identify where time, fuel, and margin are being lost. You receive a written assessment with prioritized, costed recommendations, not a slide deck.

Cost-Reduction
Programs

Analysis of your true cost per mile, per load, and per unit. We isolate the drivers of avoidable expense — deadhead, idle time, poor lane selection, underused equipment, avoidable third-party spend — and build a plan to address them, with measurable targets.

Productivity, Asset
Utilization & Scheduling

Practical improvements to how your equipment and people are deployed : scheduling discipline, route sequencing, load consolidation, and turnaround. The goal is more revenue per asset without additional capital.

Project Logistics
Coordination

We coordinate on your behalf with customers, vendors, carriers, and government agencies to keep complex movements on schedule. Permitting, escort arrangement, carrier selection, and stakeholder communication, managed as a single point of contact.

Site & Route
Assessment

On-the-ground evaluation of sites, routes, and access before you commit equipment. Clearances, load restrictions, seasonal road bans, turning radii, staging, and environmental and access constraints — documented in a report your dispatchers and drivers can actually use.

Workforce
Solutions

Driver and contract labour placement, recruitment support, and HR advisory for carriers and private fleets. We recruit for the role you actually have, screen against it, and advise on retention, policy, and compliance.

Employee Training —
On-Site or Off-Site

Practical training for drivers and operations staff, delivered at your facility or ours : safety practices, hours-of-service and documentation discipline, load securement, and dispatch procedure.

Services

We also haul. Full truckload, LTL, oversize, expedited, and specialized freight across Western Canada and the continental U.S., with cross-border capability and occasional escort service. Over a decade of loads on these lanes is the same experience that informs the consulting work.
